Velez Very Good For Giants

by @ 9:08 pm. Filed under 2008 Giants

For the second straight game, Eugenio Velez led the Giants to another walk-off win against the D-backs to complete the sweep and extend San Francisco’s win streak to five. The 4-3 win, was another tough comeback effort in which closer Brian Wilson struggled for the second straight save opportunity.
Brad Hennessey did a nice job, taking over for Kevin Correia in the rotation. Allowed just one run that came on a solo homer in the third inning. He gave up just three other hits, and three walks over six innings of work while striking out three. Jack Taschner and Sergio Romo pitched two scoreless innings in relief to set Wilson up for another save, but for the second game in a row, he blew it. Alex Hinshaw was forced to finish off the ninth inning and maintain a one-run deficit going into the bottom of the ninth.
Velez did it all for the Giants, driving in all four runs on just two hits. He went two-for-five with a go-ahead double in the third inning and the game-winning triple. Randy Winn did go three-for-four with a walk, but none of his hits amounted to anything big for San Francisco. Overall, the Giants offense left a shameful twenty-seven runners on base!
Matt Cain will get the start tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. against Padres rookie Josh Geer. The Giants will head to San Diego for a four-game weekend series, but should enjoy it after playing well all week.
