Velez Becomes A Hero

by @ 5:35 am. Filed under 2008 Giants

A close game had to be won by Eugenio Velez in the tenth inning last night. The Giants took an early lead, but allowed the Padres to get back in the game in the eighth inning, before winning it in extras 3-2.
Tim Lincecum did a good job, giving the Giants an opportunity to win, but he ended up with a no decision. Lincecum went seven strong innings, giving up just one run on three hits and struck out eleven hitters. Tyler Walker dealt with a batter in the eighth before Jack Taschner gave up a solo shot to Adrian Gonzalez that tied the game. Sergio Romo made sure San Diego did not get anything else in the ninth inning before San Francisco took the lead in the top of the tenth. Brian Wilson ensured the win in the bottom half of the frame to get his twenty-ninth save of the season.
The Giants improved offensively from their last two games, because they actually scored runs this time, and managed enough to get a win. Hitting out of the three spot, Fred Lewis was two-for-three with two singles, one that drove in a run, and he also came around to score one himself. Velez’s pinch hit double in the tenth inning that drove in Emmanuel Burriss gave the Giants the lead that Wilson would use to finalize the win in the bottom half of the inning
Tonight the Giants will look to take the series from San Diego. It will be a matchup between a former ace in Barry Zito and a proven one, Jake Peavy. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
