Giants Take San Diego Series

by @ 4:24 pm. Filed under 2008 Giants

The Giants completed a dramatic comeback win last night, taking a two-run lead in the tenth inning, and then holding off the Padres bats to win 8-6. The September call-ups are making a case for why they belong in the Majors.
Barry Zito ended up having a rough and wild day, lasting just four and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and five walks. Kevin Correia finished off the fifth inning to spare Zito of any more damage to his ERA. Outstanding relief appearances by Jack Taschner, Keiichi Yabu, Alex Hinshaw, and Sergio Romo helped the Giants chances at completing the comeback. Brian Wilson gave up just one hit in the bottom of the tenth, and struck out one hitter to save his thirty-ninth game of the year.
The offense performed in the series finale, collecting five walks and thirteen hits (only two were extra-base hits, both doubles) to score eight runs. Despite taking a one-run in the first inning, the Padres had a four-run second inning to take the lead, but the Giants did not quit and fought back by putting up a four-run inning of their own in the sixth to tie the game at six. The rookies played a significant role in last night’s victory, Travis Ishikawa went three-for-five with two runs scored and an RBI. Scott McClain and Eugenio Velez had two-for-five days, each with a run scored and RBI; and Pablo Sandoval scored what would end up being the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the tenth inning.
From San Diego, the Giants will head to Arizona for a four game series against the D-backs. Brad Hennessey will pitch against Doug Davis tonight at 6:40 p.m. in the first game of the series. San Francisco will be trying to play the role of spoilers from here on out.
