Giants Bats Come Alive To Ruin Pitching Duel

by @ 3:21 am. Filed under 2008 Giants

The eighth inning in last night’s game made the difference. The Giants scored six runs in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie, and held on to win 6-0. A well pitched game by both sides became one-sided in a hurry.
Jonathan Sanchez was outstanding for San Francisco, scattering four hits over seven innings pitched while walking just two batters. He also struck out four Washington hitters. Sanchez got help from his defense too, they turned three double plays behind him. Tyler Walker and Pat Misch were perfect in relief, each pitching the eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory. The bullpen has been the most consistent part of the team, almost always shutting down the opposition.
Both teams were pretty quiet offensively until San Francisco put up a six-run eighth inning. The inning was highlighted by John Bowker’s grand slam. Bowker lifted a two-out 1-0 pitch up and over the centerfield fence to give the Giants a solid lead. Bengie Molina also drove in a run with a single and was two-for-five in the game with another single. Rich Aurilia also had a good game, going three-for-four with a RBI on two singles and a double.
The third game of the series will be an early one, starting at 10:35 a.m. Barry Zito will look to continue what could turn into a nice road winning streak. Garrett Mock will pitch for the Nationals. The Giants are 6-4 in their last ten games and seven games back of the division leading D-backs.
