With the fifth overall pick in the draft, the Giants chose Gerald Posey, a junior catcher from Florida State University. As a right-handed batter, Posey hits for contact, but has little power. He is a former shortstop turned catcher and is still learning to play the position, but has excellent potential. He does not have much speed on the basepaths (like Bengie Molina), but is certainly an athletic player with good instincts as a runner. Posey has the ability to play many games behind the plate and maintain a solid batting average, which makes him an attractive pick. As he gets more opportunities to catch and develop into a veteran at the position, he should be a good addition to the Giants organization.
The Giants will begin a seven-day roadtrip tonight with a four-game series at Washington, and then moving to Colorado. Tonight’s game will feature a matchup between Tim Lincecum and Jason Bergmann, it is scheduled to start at 4:35 p.m.
